August 2026 Newsletter

Welcome to the Homer Public Library’s August 2026 Newsletter! This monthly newsletter features our upcoming events and news. Pick up a print copy at our Main Circulation Desk or fill out the form on our Newsletter page to receive our monthly newsletter in your inbox.

Below are our August events for Adults, Children, and Teens. Some events may require registration to ensure we have plenty of supplies for all attendees. If so, please call or visit the library to register for those events.

Note: The library will be closed for Pelotonia on Saturday, August 1st. We will reopen at 9am on Monday, August 3rd.

Also, as a special note, we would like to thank Steve and Sue Reeser for their generous donation to our library. Thank you!

Adult Events: 

GetSetUp with Kathy @ the Library - Join Kathy to learn more about GetSetUp, the online learning community for adults 55+, during a weekly meetup. In August, join us every Monday at 10am for exercise and health topics.

Medicare Discussion with Jason Barber - Join us on Thursday, August 6th at 11am for a Medicare Discussion with Jasn Barber of TLC Insurance Group. Gain a greater understanding and get answers to common questions about Medicare.

Recipe Swap - Join us on Friday, August 7th at 11am for Recipe Swap. This month's theme is A New Recipe You Have Never Made. Drinks and table service will be provided. Don't forget to bring the recipe with you. 

Ukulele Association of Homer - Join us to practice your ukulele and share your enthusiasm for this unique instrument with the Ukulele Association of Homer on Thursday, August 13th and August 27th from 5pm-7pm. You may bring your own ukulele or borrow one from us. An experienced ukulele player will be available to provide a lesson, if needed. All ages are welcome!

Community of Women - Join us for Community of Women on Tuesday, August 18th at 2pm for an informal gathering to share ideas, encourage, and support one another through life's challenges as we grow wiser (age) together. This month we are reading and discussing the chapters Outreach and The Present from The Gift of Years by Joan Chittister.

Brunch & A Movie – You’re invited to join us for Brunch & A Movie on Friday, August 21st from 10am-12pm. This month we’re screening The Last Rifleman (2023), a drama inspired by the 2014 D-Day journey of Bernard Jordan. Please RSVP by Thursday, August 20th. Note: This movie is rated PG-13. Here is a summary of the film: Meet Private Artie Crawford. He’s 92 ¾ and he’s just gone AWOL. A WWII veteran escapes his care home in Northern Ireland and embarks on an arduous but inspiration journey to France to attend the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, finding the courage to face the ghosts of his past.

Book Club - Join us for Book Club on Friday, August 28th at 11am. This month's book is The Briar Club by Kate Quinn. Call or visit to reserve your copy of this historical fiction novel. 

Brown Bag Wellness - Brown Bag it with Kathy on Friday, August 28th at 12pm! Pack your lunch and join us for a fun, casual chat about health and wellness.

Historical Society - Join the Homer Historical Society in the meeting room on Friday, August 28th at 2pm for a discussion of local history. Please bring any "show and tell" items that you would like to share.

Children’s Events: 

Children's Story Time and Homer Homeschoolers will resume in September. Enjoy your break!

Teen Events:

Teen Crafting - Join Lauren this month for Teen Crafting on Tuesday, August 11th at 5:30pm and create paint ceramic figures. Registration is required. Please call or visit the library to register.

Teen Paint Night - Join Lauren for Teen Paint Night on Tuesday, August 18th at 5:30pm to create a pool scene painting. Let your creativity flow! Registration is required. Please visit or call the library to register.

Teen Movie & Pizza Night – On Thursday, August 20th from 5pm-7pm check out the new sci-fi Disney Pixar film, Hoppers (2026), with Lauren. Pizza and drinks will be served. Please RSVP by 5pm on Wednesday, August 19th. Note: This movie is rated PG. Here is a summary of the film: A 19-year-old animal lover uses technology that places her consciousness into a robotic beaver to uncover mysteries within the animal world beyond her imagination.
